### Overview  
  
This dataset from Global BRT Data shows cities that have active bus rapid transit (BRT) systems and the year in which they commenced.  
  
Global BRT Data collects information on BRT and bus priority systems in cities around the world. BRT systems are characterized by median-aligned and segregated bus lanes, preboard fare collection, and platform-level boarding. Bus priority systems are similar in that they include dedicated bus lanes, but they may not include all of the features necessary to be classified as a BRT system.  
  
The Bus Rapid Transit Locations dataset is managed and updated monthly by the World Resources Institute (WRI) Brazil Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. The dataset covers 171 cities globally from 1968 to 2019.  
  
### Methodology  
  
The Bus Rapid Transit dataset was created by Global BRT Data. The data is collected and aggregated from various sources, including transit agencies or associations of transit agencies, government, researchers, and nongovernmental organizations.  
  
The data may be collected from websites, publications, conversations with experts, or direct observations. In instances where sources of published data contradict each other, Global BRT Data defers to data from transit agencies, governments, or peer-reviewed publications. The most current data available is used whenever possible.
