Access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking data, published by the World Bank in the World Development Indicators database, are based on the Global Household Energy Database of the World Health Organization (WHO). They measure the proportion of the total population primarily using clean cooking fuels and technologies for cooking for 150 countries from 2000 through present. They are collected from nationally representative household surveys (including national censuses). Survey sources include demographic and health surveys (DHSs) and living standards measurement surveys (LSMSs), multi-indicator cluster surveys (MICSs), the World Health Survey (WHS), other nationally developed and implemented surveys, and various government agencies (ministries of energy and utilities, etc.). To develop the historical evolution of the use rates of clean fuels and technologies, a multilevel nonparametrical mixed model, using both fixed and random effects, was used to derive polluting fuel use estimates.
