### Overview  
  
Electricity installed capacity measures the [maximum electric output](https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=101&t=3) an electricity generator can produce under specific conditions. This dataset reveals the amount of electricity all the power plants in a country can produce within a year and helps quantify the [growth of energy resources](https://www.energy.gov/ne/articles/what-generation-capacity). However, considering many generators do not operate at their full capacity all the time, a generator's actual electric output [varies based on conditions at the power plant, fuel costs, and/or as instructed by the electric power grid operator](https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=101&t=3). Therefore, this dataset represents the theoretical electricity output that is possible, rather than the actual electricity generation.
  
  

The Electricity Installed Capacity dataset was released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data was reported at a national level with global coverage. Data is available for the years 1980-2019, though most countries only have data for a subset of these years. 
  
  
### Methodology  
  
EIA compiled data from a list of external sources including  
- International Energy Agency (IEA)
- Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
- Platts World Power Plants Database
- International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
- International Hydropower Association (IHA)
- United Nations (UN) Energy Statistics Database
- BP Statistical Review of World Energy
- Other government agencies, research institutes, and companies
  
  

Electricity data shows the capacity as of December 31 each year. Data from both utility and non-utility sources was used. EIA is in the process of creating specific country-level metadata for this dataset. For the full documentation, please click on the “Learn more” button.
