### Overview  
  
The Gross Domestic Product Per Capita dataset shows gross domestic product (GDP) per person based on purchasing power parity (PPP), converted to international dollars. GDP is the sum of the value of all the goods and services produced within a nation in a given year. PPP equalizes each country’s purchasing power by controlling for differences in price levels between economies. An international dollar has the same purchasing power over GDP as the U.S. dollar has in the United States. In other words, an international dollar would buy a comparable amount of goods and services in any country that a U.S. dollar would buy in the United States. Data is shown for each year between 1990 and present at a national resolution. 

  
  
The World Bank Group International Comparison Program (World Bank Group ICP) estimates PPPs for the world’s economies in order to provide comparable price and volume measures of GDP. This dataset lets users compare national GDP between countries, currencies, and time. PPPs and underlying World Bank Group ICP data are utilized for a wide variety of analyses at the global, regional, and national levels and cover many themes under the economic, environmental, and social development umbrellas. They can be used not only by the development community and researchers, but by policymakers, the media, and the wider public.

  
  
The World Bank Group ICP is one of the largest statistical initiatives in the world. It relies on a partnership of international, regional, sub-regional, and national agencies working under a robust governance framework and following an established statistical methodology. Its main objectives are to produce PPPs for participating countries and to convert GDP and its expenditure components into a common currency.
  
  
### Methodology  
  
The Gross Domestic Product Per Capita dataset has three major components for its methodology:
- The System of National Accounts (SNA) definition of final expenditures on GDP
- The basket of goods and services from which items are selected for pricing
- The methodology used to compute PPPs, within and across regions

  
  
The SNA uses national expenditures as weights to aggregate PPPs through the various levels of aggregation up to GDP. The basket of goods and services, also known as the global core list of items, is used to compare the same items between different countries within a region. The methodology used to compute PPPs is based on two approaches: the Jevons index by Gini-Éltető-Köves-Szulc (GEKS) and the country product dummy method. Each participating economy also provides the following required data: 
- National annual average prices for a selection of items chosen from a common basket 
- A breakdown of national expenditures in local currency according to a common classification
- Market exchange rates
- Population

  
  
The national average prices and national expenditures are used to calculate PPPs and are reported by participating economies in their local currencies. Both cover the whole range of final goods and services constituting the GDP.
