### Overview  
  
This dataset tracks the number of people who have been internally displaced recently due to conflict, natural disasters, or development projects worldwide, and is updated daily. ”Internal displacement” refers to the forced movement of people within the country that they live in. Millions of people are forced to flee their homes each year due to conflict, violence, development projects, disasters, and climate change, and remain displaced within their countries of residence.
  
  

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) can include both citizens and other habitual residents of the country, such as stateless persons. IDPs can include, but are not limited to
  
  
- families caught between warring parties who had to flee their homes due to continuous attacks or threats;
  
  
- residents of neighborhoods that have become unsafe or uninhabitable due to the impacts of weather-related, geophysical, or technological hazards;
  
  
- indigenous communities forced from their ancestral lands to make way for the construction of dams and other infrastructure projects;
  
  
- families pushed to leave their homes by constant harassment by local criminal gangs;
  
  
- communities whose livelihoods have been severely impacted by drought and are unable to feed their families; and
  
  
- communities from coastal, mountainous, or arid regions whose land and livelihoods were lost because of gradual environmental degradation linked to the impacts of climate change.
  
  

Some of the typical needs and protection risks that arise in internal displacement include family separation, loss of documentation, loss of property, and further exposure to the risk of continued displacement.
  
  

This dataset is produced by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) with the aim of informing policy and operational decisions in order to reduce the risk of future displacement and improve the lives of IDPs worldwide. Resource Watch also shows IDMC estimates of the number of people displaced annually, aggregated to the national level. ### Methodology  
  
Country analysts monitor displacements in near real-time on an event-by-event basis after IDMC learns of their occurrence. For each event, information from a wide variety of different sources is compiled, generating the most comprehensive and reliable displacement estimate. These sources include national and subnational government authorities, UN agencies and other international organizations, related global databases, civil society organizations, news media outlets, and other entities.
